STEM contains several fields. It's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. And that covers a lot of majors and a lot of different careers and fields of study.
Here at Amarillo College, we have so much support to help our students through these programs. At any time, if they feel challenged, or they need help, of course, they can always go to their faculty member for help.
But we also have a Math Academic Success Center where students can come on campus or join remotely work one-on-one with a peer tutor. So students should not feel intimidated at Amarillo College because we have a warm environment where you can certainly get the support that you need to work through those classes.
So we have four greenhouses that are designed to mimic the ideal plant environment. So we're able to have the optimum growing conditions for these plants that are usually used in various coursework. As a student, I would rather work with the plant directly than read about it in the textbook. So having that hands-on experience makes a big impact.
We have a lot of very high-end research equipment. We have an agreement working with WT for them to come and use equipment that we have here-- Infrared Spectrometer and a PCR machine. And so we're working on relationships with them and with New Mexico Tech and other schools to come and use equipment that we have here.
You're ahead of students who are at those universities because they don't get to work with this kind of equipment in freshman and sophomore-level courses. And so you have that head start when you get there.
